The Art of the Teese

The Art of the Teese

What a dream.  Last weekend I was lucky to see the goddess (please read that in your best Katherine Hepburn voice) appear in-person at the Gramercy Theatre.

I was first introduced to the world of Ms. Von Teese a couple of years ago by my bestie, who I saw the show with.  Since then I have fully immersed myself into her world of vintage, beauty and glamour.

I have her exclusive matte “Von Teese” color from MAC (you’ve probably seen me wearing it on Instagram), some of her beautiful lingerie pieces and her magnificent coffee table book “Your Beauty Mark”.

A bit of pre-show fun!

It’s been interesting reading “Your Beauty Mark”, a lot of her musings and advice felt very truthful to me.  I’ve realized it’s because I grew up on the same film stars that Ms. Von Teese looks to for inspiration.

And so, I was over the moon with her number “Lazy”, famously performed by Marilyn Monroe in There’s No Business Like Show Business.  As a little girl, I remember many an afternoon singing the song with my imaginary backup dancers – if only they were as handsome as the “Von-terage”!

Dita was everything I hoped for and more.  Having never seen her or heard much about her shows, I didn’t know what to expect.

She opened with her fabulous martini glass, left me in awe with her ballet routine and hooked with her pink-western-rhinestone-themed number!

Not surprisingly, every detail from her costumes, makeup, routine, smile, nod and movement were sublime.

I’m not sure that I would be able to completely convert to a vintage life but I am digging my half moon nails and I went out the next day and bought a daily-wear garter belt (stay tuned for my adventures in hosiery!).  I am also holding out for a pair of her stockings with rhinestones up the back...

I was completely obsessed with the rest of her cast as well, Murray Hill was a delight as our MC for the evening and I was so so so excited to see Catherine D’Lish perform.  Her robes are on my #goals list (in case anyone is looking to get me an early birthday gift, please see below).

Overall, my bestie and I had such a wonderful night!  It was a thrill to see Dita perform in person.

I would recommend that if this inspires you to get tickets to Dita's or another similar burlesque show, to make sure to buy seats.  We got standing, GA admission and there was a lot of *what I imagine* was beautiful floor work that was just impossible to see, especially in a space like The Gramercy.
